If you’ve done any reading about AEO, you’ve probably encountered the term “schema markup” and then moved on because it sounded technical and complicated. This post is here to tell you it’s less complicated than it sounds, why it matters significantly for your AI visibility, and exactly what types of schema a local business needs to have in place. No developer required for most of it. No coding background needed to understand it.

What Schema Markup Actually Is

Schema markup is structured data — code added to your website that explicitly tells AI and search engines what your content means, not just what it says. Without schema, AI has to infer meaning from your content. With schema, you’re stating meaning directly in a format AI can read without ambiguity.

A simple analogy: imagine your business information is a paragraph of text. A human reading it can understand that “123 Main Street, Suite 200, Des Moines, Iowa” is an address. But AI reading plain text has to make that inference. Schema markup is like adding a label: “This is an address, and specifically it’s a street address in a city in a state in a country.” Instead of inferring, AI knows. That certainty — from inference to explicit declaration — is what schema markup gives you. And certainty builds citation confidence.

The Four Schema Types Every Local Business Needs

LocalBusiness Schema is the foundation. It explicitly declares your business as a local entity, specifies your business type, provides your name, address, phone, website, hours of operation, geo-coordinates, and service area. This is non-negotiable — it’s the schema that tells AI exactly what your entity is and where it operates. Without it, AI is guessing at basic facts that you could simply declare.

FAQPage Schema is the AEO workhorse. When you publish an FAQ page on your website, FAQPage schema marks up each question and answer in a format AI can read and directly cite. This is why FAQ pages are so frequently cited in AI recommendations — not just because they contain answers, but because schema markup makes those answers explicitly readable as Q&A pairs. AI doesn’t have to parse your prose to find the answer. The answer is labeled.

Service Schema allows you to explicitly declare each service you offer as a distinct, describable thing. Rather than AI inferring your services from your website copy, Service schema states them directly: this business offers this specific service, here’s what it is, here’s the area it covers. For businesses with multiple distinct service lines, this schema type significantly improves the precision of AI matching between your services and relevant queries.

Review/AggregateRating Schema makes your review data machine-readable. If your website displays customer reviews or aggregates ratings, this schema type explicitly communicates your rating, review count, and review text to AI. This is particularly valuable because it corroborates the review signals AI observes on Google and Yelp with on-site data — double-sourcing the social proof that drives recommendation confidence.

How to Implement Schema Without a Developer

If you’re on WordPress, the easiest path is the Yoast SEO or RankMath plugin — both offer schema configuration through a settings interface that requires no coding. LocalBusiness schema can be configured by filling out a form. FAQPage schema gets added automatically when you use their FAQ block. This covers the foundational requirements with essentially no technical knowledge required.

For businesses not on WordPress, Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper (free, searchable) allows you to generate schema code by pointing and clicking on elements of your webpage. You then add the generated code to your page header. A one-time task that pays dividends indefinitely. How to Verify Your Schema Is Working

Use Google’s Rich Results Test — search for it, paste your URL, and it will show you exactly what schema it detects on your pages. If it shows no structured data, you have no schema. If it shows errors, your schema has implementation problems. If it shows valid results, you’re in good shape. Run this test on your homepage, your FAQ page, and your main service pages.
