Smartphone showing ChatGPT interface next to a Google search bar representing the battle for search dominance

The question is everywhere right now: is ChatGPT replacing Google? It’s on marketing blogs, in LinkedIn threads, in board rooms, and — increasingly — in the minds of small business owners wondering if everything they’ve done to show up in search results is about to become irrelevant. The honest answer is more nuanced than the headlines suggest. But there’s something very real happening that every local business owner needs to understand — because whether ChatGPT “replaces” Google or not, the way your customers find you is already changing.

What the Data Actually Shows

Google isn’t going anywhere — it still handles over 8 billion searches per day and commands roughly 90% of the global search market. But the trend lines are worth watching. ChatGPT reached 100 million users faster than any product in history. Perplexity is growing at triple-digit rates year over year. Microsoft’s Copilot is embedded in Windows, Office, and Edge. And critically, Google itself has responded by deploying AI Overviews — AI-generated answer summaries that now appear at the top of a significant portion of Google search results before any blue links.

What this means in practice: a growing percentage of search queries — especially the high-intent, specific questions that drive local business — are now being answered by AI directly rather than returning a list of links to click. “Who’s the best plumber in [city]?” used to surface a map pack and ten blue links. Now it increasingly surfaces a direct answer. And that answer cites two or three specific businesses by name. The businesses in that answer win. The ones not in that answer effectively don’t exist for that query.

The Behavior Shift That Actually Matters

The real story isn’t about market share statistics — it’s about behavior change in the demographic that drives the most local business. Consumers aged 18–45 have adopted AI for information gathering faster than any previous technology. They’re not just using AI for curiosity queries — they’re using it for purchase decisions. “Best contractor in [neighborhood] for a bathroom renovation,” “which accounting firm is best for a small LLC in [city],” “top-rated urgent care near [zip code]” — these high-intent, high-value queries are increasingly being asked of AI assistants rather than typed into Google.

This isn’t speculation. PromptBridge clients who have implemented AI visibility tracking report that when they ask ChatGPT and Perplexity relevant local queries, they’re getting named recommendations with zero traditional SEO connection to their ranking position. A business that ranks #1 on Google for its primary keyword may not appear at all in the AI answer for the same query. And a business with mediocre SEO but strong entity authority signals — Google Business Profile, review volume, consistent NAP, structured content — may appear prominently in AI recommendations despite its Google ranking.

The Google AI Overviews Complication

Here’s the piece that makes this especially urgent for local business owners: even if you only care about Google, you now need AEO. Google’s AI Overviews — the AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results — are essentially AEO in disguise. They cite businesses and sources that have built the kind of entity authority and structured content that AI systems trust. Being optimized for traditional Google ranking is no longer sufficient to appear in Google’s own AI layer. You need to be optimized for both.

So What Do You Actually Do?

Stop thinking about “Google vs. ChatGPT” as a choice and start thinking about it as a unified visibility challenge. The foundational investments that drive AEO — Google Business Profile completeness, NAP consistency, review volume, schema markup, direct-answer content — also strengthen traditional SEO. They’re not competing strategies. An AEO-optimized local business is also a better-optimized traditional SEO business, because both are downstream of the same fundamental question: does your digital presence clearly, consistently, and authoritatively signal who you are, where you are, and what you do?

The businesses that will own their local markets in the next three to five years are the ones building that foundation now — while most competitors are still debating whether AI search is “real” enough to care about. By the time it’s undeniably real, the early movers will have a compounding authority advantage that late movers will spend years trying to close.
